ITMCOC-2574 Inside Cisco IT: Coping with the Explosion of Mobile Devices in the Enterprise Tuesday, January 31: 14:15
This was a prensentation on the specific issue Cisco has experienced in coping with the number and the variety of mobile devices that the user wants to connect to the enterprise network.
The key issue was that the user was not willing to accept a corporate decision on a choice of mobile device. Oviously a Blackberry fiited in with the corporate needs to offer a secure solution. The main criteria for supporting a remote device being PIN protection, remote wipe and VPN support.
With the release of IPhone and Android tablets in the early days neither device supported any security features. The Iphone has gone someway to support secure options and Cisco now support access to internal resources using the Iphone. The Android platforms however are still limited to peripheral access only.
An issue was also raised conerning the support of a broad ranges of devices. Cisco have managed to reduce support calls whilst devices numbers increase as users also now and expect to own multiples deviceas, smartphones as well as tablets. This has been achieved by adopting a simple self help approach via a very simplified internal web site approach.
An interesting concern raised in the session was not one of support but increasing bandwidth demands especially when roaming. It was stated that Cisco on average on a blackberry device had 30Mb useage, on IPhones/Android it was 350Mb on LTE Android 4G it was 1.2 Gig. Video again was mentioned today as a application that was going to be an imnportant factor to consider now and in the future on the network.
