BRKEWN-2018 Secure Mobility in the Cisco Unified WLAN Networks Tuesday, January 31: 11:15
This session was aimed at giving a quick overview of wireless technologies and the authentication and security protection of wireless access. The topics included 802.11i/WPA/WPAv2, TKIP/AES. The big topic covered was fast roaming with CCKM, PKC, and the emerging 802.11r standard.
The main theme of the Keynote speech, attended just before this event was that a "good enough approach" was not acceptable and that solutions had to be more than good enough. This was relected in this session when it came to the reasoning behind "fast roaming". The idea of fast roaming is that it is not good enough for a wireless client to delay moving to a better access point and whilst moving negotiate all the authentication and encryption algorithms again. This process of roaming could take a couple of seconds and in the meantime a voice or video call would be interupted.
It was explained that in the past wireless access was pretty much static in that we open a laptop and stayed put. With smartphones and tablets giving us true mobility fast roaming was becoming necessary.
It was my first session at Cisco Live 2012 and allthough not a wireless expert it was pitched at the correct level to convey the essentials of fast roaming. My only complaint is the chairs are not the most comfortable so focused the attention probably a delibrate move :-).
