BRKGS-2017
Virtualisation changes the provisioning paradigm
Tuesday, January 31: 13:45

I did not set very high expectations for this session as it was a come as you go session held in the Gold Partner Theatre which was in the World of Solutions. The session was to be 30 minutes in a noisy area but I managed to get a front of house seat with a good view and I sat down, prepared to be entertained.

The guest speaker was from Panduit and according to the schedule his name was David Palmer-Stevens.

I know Panduit from old so I knew the focus of the session would be around cabling, maybe not everyones cup of tea and for many years layer 1 and 2 held no excitement for me either. This all changed for me when at one time I worked for a cable company, Anixter.

The delivery was punchy and set the scene with a 3 phase slide, Phase 1---Google, find document---Read, Phase 3---Youtube, find information----See. It really set the scene on past and present ways of data access. This was shortly followed by a slide on a 1997 Super Computer exceeded by a PlayStation in 2006. This was all leading to a discussion on the needs of a data centre of today, size and capacity.

A lovely fact about how Panduit coped with a huge install of 256x10gig and 256x40gig and 256x100gig in all 8208 fibers. With a Panduit solution it took one installer with one Phillips screwdriver 6 hours to complete. The message was all about standard pre-configured solutions.

Some great stories about doors on the ends of racks solving major heat distributions problems and outages.

Another great story about 10gig rollouts from Cisco working in Cisco but not on site. Problem.... lack of proper grounding. The example of following an earth connection underfloor to see it dangling in fresh air was priceless.

Download the PDF's and see how different it is from other more formal presentations.
